Data Privacy Day
January 28 marks Data Privacy Day around the world and offers a chance to talk about the importance of protecting personal information.
Manitobans give personal information to many different organizations and public bodies. Those public bodies and health information trustees are required to protect that personal information. Protecting personal information includes complying with privacy legislation and preventing prevent privacy breaches such as theft or loss, or unauthorized access/sharing/use of personal information.

Privacy protection happens every day and is guided by strong privacy policies and practices that include a range of physical, administrative and technical safeguards. Apart from strong and consistent privacy practices, privacy impact assessments can be used to evaluate an existing or proposed program, service or activity. A PIA can help ensure privacy is considered and prioritized throughout all phases and aspects of an initiative. - Be careful about who you give your information to. Is it necessary in each instance?
- Check your privacy settings on apps and devices.
- Read privacy policies and terms of service on apps, programs or websites you provide information to.
- Know your rights about how your personal information should be protected and what you can complain or ask about. Ask questions if you are unsure how your information is being used.
- Have strong passwords and secure your devices.
