2011 Right to Know Events and Announcements

September 28, 2011 is international Right to Know Day. This annual event celebrates the right of individual access to information held by public bodies, and the benefits of transparent, accessible government.

The week of September 26 to September 30, 2011 is being marked in Canadian provinces, territories and federally as Right to Know Week. In Manitoba, Right to Know Week is being noted in several ways. Manitoba Ombudsman is helping to provide information on right to know events hosted by organizations and communities recognizing this fundamental democratic right.

Government Proclamations for Right to Know Week

Every year we ask Manitoba's Premier and the mayors of all nine cities in Manitoba to proclaim Right to Know Week in their jurisdictions, publicly demonstrating their commitment to upholding an individual's right of access to government-held information. We are pleased to acknowledge the Province of Manitoba and the cities of Brandon, Dauphin, Flin Flon, Portage la Prairie, Selkirk, Thompson and Winkler for proclaiming Right to Know Week. Please see our poster acknowledging city proclamations. View the 2011 proclamations:

Access and Privacy Website Update

The Access and Privacy website has been updated with new features and information:

  • Investigation reports where recommendations were made to a public body and the public body's response to the recommendations
  • More information about making access and privacy complaints under The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA), including a new complaint form to assist the public in making PHIA complaints

Grace-Pépin Access to Information Award

Named in honour of John Grace, former Information Commissioner of Canada, and Marcel Pépin, president and founder of the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec, the Grace-Pépin Access to Information Award recognizes the efforts of an individual, group or organization that contributes in a significant way to promoting and supporting the principles of transparency, accountability and the public's right to access information held by public institutions.

The recipient of the very first award will be honoured during the 7th International Conference of Information Commissioners, October 4-5, 2011, in Ottawa.
