Freeman Zong was taken into custody by Dauphin RCMP officers on July 11, 2016, after the RCMP received reports that Mr. Zong had discharged a firearm and was threatening self-harm. After a hospital visit, he was admitted to the Dauphin Correctional Institution (DCI) and was assessed by the admitting officer as a medium suicide risk. On July 14, 2016, after another hospital visit, Mr. Zong committed suicide in the DCI washroom. The cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation by hanging.
